Diary of an Organized Kid
Fall, 2023

Special Diary session dates:

October 5-6: A 2-day workshop from 10am-12:15pm Thursday and Friday

Location: The Learning Lab, Kentfield CA
Investment: $475

This one-of-a-kind, 4-student peer group takes a lighthearted approach to teaching some serious academic, organizational, and real-world skills. TED Talks, funny YouTube videos, and clips from the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid prompt lively, hands-on activities and discussion, all geared toward:
  • Boosting your child’s organization and sense of control
  • Leveraging technology to enhance productivity
  • Sharing super practical, often overlooked problem solving and communication skills for adolescence.
The initial activities don't even mention school, organization, to do lists -you know, the typical executive function kinds of topics and conversations. Rather, highly entertaining YouTube videos and other clips capture students' interest and attention about a range of important underlying topics including:
  • The nervous system, courtesy of squirrel guy (put the volume down)
  • The lessons of the marshmallow test: can participants resist one and earn more?
  • Teen Brain 101: interesting, actionable, relevant brain science
  • Mindsets: understanding the life-long benefits of rolling with growth mindset
  • ...and eventually, how it all relates to executive function skills: simple, highly relevant explanations and proven tips for making improvements in school, in relationships, and in life.
The special Diary sessions this fall vary in terms of the amount of material they will cover.  In general, students will use and/or learn about a variety of iPad apps, features, and techniques to:
  • Implement an organizational systems for digital documents, handouts, etc. (Notability and Google Drive)
  • Streamline the whole HW completion/submission process:  learn fast, easy methods to download, complete, and submit digital documents via Google Classroom/Canvass, using Notability, SnapType  -no more taking photos of completed work and uploading
  • Easily annotate and organize PDFs so they're readily accessible and organized for tests, projects, etc: Notability / Kami
  • Manage time and tasks -paper and digitally (Pomodoro techniques, Google Taks, Keep + benefits of paper/pencil options)
  • Scan/import and listen to docs, PDFs, and other formats using Speechify
  • Eliminate distracting notifications (most), enable useful ones (a few)
  • Take more effective notes during discussions/lectures

I want to thank you for your work with my twins when they met with you at MPMS and then attended your camp and learned how to self organize. Every year I was taken aside at the first parent meeting and was solemnly informed they had ADD. This propelled me to you, via your common sense presentations in Marin schools as part of Parent Education, and (our neuro-psych’s recommendation).  They were euphoric about all the tools you introduced them to. They loved how he felt in greater control of his life.  I am very grateful for the tools and positivity you were able to impart to us all. -B.M.S., Marin
