 Mission: Executive Function
An Organizational Program for Students and Families

These days, you likely know more than ever about your child’s study habits and executive function skills. Would you welcome expert advice to help implement a more organized, productive, and helpful home-learning space?

“It was great to meet with you today. Thanks for a great session! We all learned a lot. We would welcome
a follow up to see how we can help (our 9th grade son) implement some of the tools and strategies discussed today.
"

Father of 9th grader, S.F.

What is Mission: Executive Function?
M:EF introduces a simple at-home program that is designed for parents who seek expert guidance implementing a more helpful and cool-headed home study environment -one that fosters greater independence and self-regulation. The lively presentation shares a helpful executive function framework that is practical, relevant, and useful to parents and students alike. Families exit the consult with a wealth of helpful information and resources to make an action plan, immediately.

This hour-long, 1:1 Zoom consult explores a variety of flexible, age-appropriate tools and techniques to help students:
  • Understand the concept of self-regulation and its critical role in learning and life
  • Identify specific study and organizational strategies that match his or her learning style
  • Learn specific techniques for organizing information from different sources for tests, writing assignments, study guides, etc.
  • Organize a workspace that enables greater focus
  • Implement paper/digital tools and techniques to maintain a calendar of important events and due dates
  • Break larger, multi-step assignments into manageable sections
  • “Unlock” digital handouts to create ample space for handwritten or typed responses, diagrams, math problem solving, etc.
  • Keep their physical, digital documents organized and retrievable
  • Use iPad apps, a stylus, and iOS to get way more done.

M:EF helps parents:
  • Implement an action plan clarifies agreed-upon goals, actions, and shared responsibilities
  • Explore software options that block or limit devices' access to distracting apps and websites
  • Build bridges between supports at school/tutors and home
  • Reflect on their executive function profiles and its impact on home learning and organization
  • Intervene more helpfully now, rather than putting it off until adolescence or later.

Does your child need to participate in the Mission: Executive Function consult?
  • No, some parents choose to have a parent consult first, then make a plan.
Are there opportunities for ongoing executive function support?
  • Yes, it is possible. The process begins with a Mission: Executive Function, Zoom consult with the whole family or at least one parent and the child. If everyone agrees that working together is a helpful next step we can try to find time. This is often two check-ins per week for 30-45 minutes but it's flexible.
  • Ongoing support: parents can schedule Executive Function Strategy Sessions for students. These Zoom consults provide direct instruction with tools and strategies that enable executive function skill acquisition and improved routines.
Do parents need to purchase anything beforehand?
  • No, it is all a demonstration. Many apps are free, others can be purchased later: Notability, Inspiration, Inspiration Maps, Prizmo, Freedom app
  • M:EF explores several useful Chrome extensions, but tech-wise it is really designed for students who use iPads/iOS.
